COUNSELLING

What to expect

At times in our lives we all could use some space to reflect on our personal issues and relationships.

Counselling offers a safe and confidential space to examine some of the difficulties you face in life, helping you to gain insight and understanding and to move forward with greater clarity. It can help you to reflect on the past and recognise its impact on the present. It can also help you to recognise patterns in your thinking and behaviour that may hold you back from who you want to be. Counselling may also provide support whilst you are going through times of change or facing particular challenges.

At the heart of counselling is the relationship between the client and counsellor. They build a trusting, non-judgemental working relationship, giving the client the opportunity to share thoughts and feelings openly within a confidential, safe environment. The counselling process is unique to each individual. Sometimes it raises difficult or painful feelings which can be worked through and explored with the counsellor.

I appreciate that finding a counsellor can be a daunting experience! I always suggest an introductory session. This is an opportunity for you to meet me personally and to see if I am the right therapist for you. I will tell you more about the way I work and what to expect. I will also ask you to tell me about your background and what is bringing you to counselling. At the end of the session you are free to go home and think about whether you would like to book ongoing sessions, otherwise we can go ahead and arrange a first session there and then if you would like to.
